Exploring Trends in Learning Design: A Shift from Content to Experience

Co-presented with Phylise Banner

The learning design landscape is continuously shifting alongside evolutions in technology. Traditional approaches to learning content management are being eclipsed by learning experience platforms (LXPs) – solutions that enable personalized learning experiences ala Netflix. These AI enabled, learner-centered approaches can connect our learners to the content, interactions, assessments, and experiences that matter most to them in their moments of learning need.

We know that our learners are taking individual approaches to both formal and informal learning – across devices, platforms, and situations. At the same time, our learning content priorities are often stuck in some prescribed approach issued from our leadership teams. Where, when, and how might we shift our design practices and learning content strategies to better focus on the needs of our learners?

In this session, we will:

  • Explore the landscape of LXPs and other intelligent learning platforms that facilitate the design, development, and delivery of responsive learning experiences;
  • Examine the evolution of effective practices in learning content strategy and its relationship to knowledge management; and
  • Ideate methods for using LXPs to reconcile the chasm between what the business wants, and what our learners need.
